16 Jan 5 Supplements that Fight Gum Disease
Gum disease—called gingivitis in the early stages and periodontitis in the more serious stages—is much more common than you think. The CDC reported that 47.2% of adults over 30 had had some form of periodontal disease! In fact, you might be developing it even if you don’t yet recognize it. Is there anything you can do to not be added to that statistic?
Maintaining a diligent oral hygiene regimen is your first line of defense. Your body is also capable of great things on its own and wants to stave off disease. But sometimes, your body could use little help. This is where supplements come in. Today, we’ll explore what supplements have the power of combatting gum disease and how these substances make a difference.
1 – Vitamin C
You saw that one coming, didn’t you? Vitamin C is everyone’s favorite vitamin, and for good reason. It’s very versatile: in just one dose, Vitamin C helps you make collagen, works to better absorb the iron in your body, boosts your immune system, and functions as an antioxidant! These superhero capabilities can be leveled against gum disease. When the National Center of Biotechnology Information conducted a systematic review of the relationship between gum disease and Vitamin C, they found that to be true. Those subjects who had gum disease had lower levels of Vitamin C intake and lower blood-vitamin C levels than those who did not have gum disease. If you take Vitamin C, not only will your skin and your immune system thank you, but it will likely also combat any gum disease present. (And hey, if you have a cold, it will probably cure that, too.)
2 –Vitamin D
Vitamin D has two things going for it when it comes to fighting gum disease—calcium absorption and its anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin D has the power to diffuse the inflammation that characterizes gum disease. Furthermore, having enough Vitamin D in your system means your body can better absorb calcium, which we know to be vital in the strength and health of your teeth and bones. Together, these powers make Vitamin D an excellent supplement to employ against periodontitis. Studies confirm that having enough Vitamin D in your system may actively prevent gum disease from occurring.
3 – Turmeric
Turmeric is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties. The key here is turmeric’s active ingredient: curcumin. Studies have suggested that curcumin may reduce dental pain, resolve dental abscesses, and yes, help treat periodontal disease. You can find this supplement in capsule form, but you may also make turmeric shots or simply incorporate more into your diet.
4 – Zinc
Gum disease often begins when oral bacteria gets out of hand. Harmful bacteria proliferate, and suddenly the gums become swollen and red, you experience sensitivity, and you realize you have a case of gum disease on your hands. Thankfully, zinc has strong anti-microbial properties. Zinc reduces your risk of gum disease by keeping those harmful bacteria in check. Be mindful, however, that taking zinc on an empty stomach may cause nausea. It is best to take zinc one hour before eating or two hours after.
5 – Omega-3s
Omega-3 fatty acids may sound unappealing due to the name, but according to the American Dietetic Association, they can reduce your risk of periodontitis by a whopping 20%! The same study that yielded that result showed that even minor amounts of omega-3 fatty acids incorporated into your diet could offer protection against gum disease. Clearly, omega-3 fatty acids are crucial supplements in a well-balanced diet.
If you’re wondering how omega-3s can do this, it turns out that like zinc, omega-3s kill the bacteria that causes gum disease. We also know that gum disease is inflammatory—hence, the red and swollen gums. Like turmeric, omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties that stop this in its tracks.
A Word of Warning
Remember that even extra vitamins and nutrient-packed foods can’t replace a well-kept oral hygiene routine. Just because broccoli is referred to as “nature’s toothbrush” doesn’t mean you can actually stop brushing your teeth! Don’t let the confidence that taking your supplements gives you lull you into a false sense of security. There is never an excuse to relax your oral hygiene regimen, especially not when gum disease is looming or already present.
Final Thoughts
Please remember that vitamins and supplements should only be added to your diet after careful consideration. If you have underlying conditions, you may need to consult your doctor before altering your routine. Supplements should also never lull you into a false sense of security so that you relax on your normal oral hygiene regimen. If taken wisely, supplements can be a wonderful tool to help decrease your risk of gum disease and improve your overall health.
